Importance of Effective Communication

In this world, effective communication is crucial in all aspects of life, be it business, job, or friendship. The ideas that a person possesses, no matter how brilliant they are, would turn futile if that person is unable to share them with others. Therefore, to achieve success in all endeavors, it is essential to communicate effectively.

I am pursuing a course in computer engineering. After graduating I would want take up a job in some big software company (e.g. Microsoft).To get into such a big company would involve not only excellent technical skills but also effective communication skills; skills to write an excellent job resume, application letter and give an outstanding interview. The competition in this era has increased so much that companies seek people with good communication skills as their first choice in job interviews since the technical skills are more or less same for everyone. Doing well in interviews involves not only knowledge in the subject but also no nervousness or stammering in voice, right facial expressions, correct use of gestures, nonverbal cues and a confident look; all of which comes if you are good in your communication skills. Also, working in software companies involves teamwork, presentation skills and writing concrete project proposals which are again a part of effective communication.

Therefore, it is extremely important for me to be good at communication and be able to convey my message across to others even if they are from a different culture or country; or possess a different accent.

  1. Hey Kripa, it is a good thing to hear that you have such ambition in working in Microsoft company. Keep up the good work that you have come so far and I wish all the best to you that you can achieve your ambition.

    I am having the same feeling as you because I am also pursuing computer engineering course. It is true that people who are working in a software company does not only face computer all the times, they also work in a team to come out with a better software product, and that's where effective communication is essential. Hope you enjoy ES2007S and benefit from it.

  3. You have explained the importance of communication in software jobs in a very good way. As a Computer Engineering student I could realize that. And in explaining that you have almost covered all the points necessary for effective communication. This makes your blog look precise. The coherence in this blog is good and the language is also clear and simple.

    As you said communication skills have become more important than technical skills for getting our dream job. This shows that we have to concentrate more on ES2007S module than other core modules.

  4. Hi Kripa,

    I do have the same sentiments as yours. In the current job market, employers would prefer to hire employees that possess high EQ and great communication skills. It takes takes a lot of courage and practice to master the art of public speaking. You have also mentioned about various "do's" and "don't's of carrying out effective communication. In addition, this also highlights the importance of equipping oneself with soft skill to interact with superiors and fellow co-workers.

    Last but not least, I am sure that we are going to have fun learning together in ES2007S!

  5. Hi Kripa,

    I think this will be a very good reference for whoever searching his/her dream job in a software company because you have put up and explain all the qualities needed nicely here. Also, I really like the introductory paragraph which fits nicely into the rest of your post.

    As an Electrical Engineer myself, I found that for CPE (Computer/Electrical Engineering) student you actually can make a difference in terms of technical skills among the cohort. Do look out for competitions, events, internships and so on. I realized that Faculty of Engineering actually has a lot of useful programs and events that most of the students do not really bother. But, ultimately, no people will be able to showcase him/herself without a good communication skills.

    So, always look out for opportunity and I hope I can see you in an awesome software company in several years :)

    I wish you all the success as well.

    @yazhini

    Thanks yazhini for the critical examination of my blog in terms of grammar and language.I really appreciate your comments.I hope i can keep it up.Also,I agree that ES2007S will definitely prove very beneficial for all of us in the long run.

    @sam

    Thanks for your comments.You have highlighted a very important point that public speaking requires lot of courage.I can totally understand your meaning because I have faced such situations in school while participating in debates and JAM(Just a Minute) sessions.That scenario is the time when we really need to coordinate our confidence,courage and communication skills together.

    I am sure we will have fun in this module.

    @Adi

    Thanks a lot for all the wishes and advices.I will definitely try to improvise my technical skills along with the communication skills to stand out amongst the cohort;and will keep an eye for any competitions in Engineering Department.

  7. Hello Kripa!

    It is the first time I know someone personally who wants to work in a big software company like Microsoft. I think thats very interesting! :P So what do you want to do there?

    I agree that a thought is nothing if one cant share it with others.

    However, I think it will be better to illustrate it this way.. No matter how beautiful an idea or a thought can be, without the ability to encode it appropriately, its brillance can never be comprehended fully. What distinguish us, humans, from animals is that we communicate in words. Ideas and thoughts can be expressed in words. But to do so successfully, we have to find the right words to go along with the right body/facial expression.

    What do you think? :)

    P.s.: All the best in your future!!:P

  8. Kripa,

    I wish you luck in getting your job.. heard google is better in terms of the welfare :)

    I've recently overheard a group of women discussing about their children's education. And one of them suggested reading some specialization in computer..and received a retort that goes "What..my child would be facing a computer 24/7!"

    They totally forgot about human colleagues whom their child need to interact with. I feel one has to be careful with the choice of words when anyone asks you the question "so what's your job/degree is all about?" Especially when the other party is an elderly.

    Personally, I feel you're already quite confident when you speak so I do hope that after ES2007S, you'll get even better! :)

    Will look forward to your next post

    You've generated good responses, and that is a good indication that what you've shared have strike a chord with your readers. I also like the interaction you have with your readers - that makes for a much more meaningful process, don’t you think so?

    Thanks for the fine effort, Kripa. I look forward to your next blog!

  11. Hey Kripa

    As a computer engineering student I can very much associate myself with what you have written.Your are correct ,the competition in our field has increased tremendously that people with exceptional communication skills are preferred over people with better technical skills. I realized this when I was looking at different job advertisements online,I found that all of them had "English :fluent" as their major criteria under job requirements.

    Thumbs up for this very relevant blog post :D
